2018 Oyster Season

The Bluff Oyster Season opened on March 1st and Bluff oysters fresh from the sea are available from local fishing outlets, cafes and restaurants in Bluff.

If you are oyster lovers, the time to be in Bluff is during the Oyster Season and enjoying oysters straight from the sea daily  (weather permitting)from 1 March through to August or when the quotas for the season have been filled.

The Annual Bluff Oyster and Food Festival in May draws crowds from around the world. Tickets are limited so check out their website.

We are a short flat walk from the Festival Site but our Lazy Fish Bluff  accommodation is booked two years in advance at present.

If you need to seek accommodation further afield in Invercargill, the Oyster festival Committee organises shuttle buses between Invercargill and the Festival site on the day so it is worth exploring further if you cannot actually be in Bluff.

Lazy Fish

Lazy fish at a British aquarium have been put on an exercise regime after staff decided they were getting spoiled by constant hand feeding, the Daily Telegraph said yesterday.

Archer fish usually spit water at passing prey to knock it into the water but specimens at the Blue Reef Aquarium in Portsmouth abandoned the practice when they realised meals would arrive without effort.

In a bid to keep their reactions sharp, staff have rigged up a mobile strung with plastic flies above the tank to encourage a bit of target practice. Each time they score a hit, a piece of food drops off the fly.
